Why We Chose an Incinerator Toilet | S1 EP29

Believe it or not, choosing the best toilet for your off-grid needs is not an easy thing to do. There are all kinds, septic toilet systems, incinerator toilet systems, composting toilets, the traditional outhouse, even catholes and latrines… We have been carefully contemplating how to safely dispose of human waste. It is a real concern, especially on an island where we want to keep everything pristine. We sure don’t want our water source contaminated!

While researching solutions for this problem, we learned that human waste is actually a biohazard! Who knew? We always thought you could just bury it and forget about it. Apparently you need to be a bit more cautious.

We considered composting toilets, but they are messy. Putting in a septic field is costly and seems like a whole lot of work. The inherent odiferous challenges associated with outhouses made that a non-starter.

So what the best solution for us when considering how to safely dispose of human waste? Simple… burn it!!
