Couple Buys Wilderness Island and Builds a Homestead | S1 Trailer
Welcome to the @mywildholm YouTube Channel!
People ask us how we decided on a name for our channel. After we bought the island, we decided it would be important to document our progress. Our family was interested in the process and then some friends wanted to see. It made sense to to post it on YouTube for our friends and family spread out across the globe.
We needed a channel name so we asked our family for YouTube channel name ideas. Our clever son-in-law came up with ‘My Wild Holm’ and won the challenge immediately. It was perfect. A ‘holm’ is a small island in a river or lake, near the mainland.
We are an ordinary couple who, together with the rest of you, have just come through the other side of the strangest years of our lives. We had all just experienced our whole world turning upside down and it certainly made us pause. With such uncertainty in the world around us, we started to dream about how great it would be to live a quiet, protected and most of all, self-sustainable existence as we enter the sunset of our lives. We began looking at all sorts of properties.
In the beginning we knew this wouldn’t be easy. In fact, we expect it all to be very challenging in every way possible. That’s what we love though. The days ahead will be filled with adventure, frustration, hard work, excitement, tears and eventually (and hopefully) a great sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.
We had many pressing issues to sort out, namely: an off grid solar power solution, which will be a huge challenge since we have been told that the weather can dip to -40 deg Celsius! Solar batteries don’t work below zero so we just may have a problem.
Another important item on the list will be figuring out an off grid water filtration and treatment solution. Can we simply treat the lake water or do we need to dig a well? We don’t know yet at this point.
For shelter, we will need a tiny cabin to begin with before we tackle our main homestead cabin. We will want to be sure of the location we choose to build our main off grid cabin and spending time on the island beforehand seems prudent.
Of course, we will need a barge, outbuildings and oh… perhaps most importantly, we will need bathroom facilities! We have ideas, we have energy, but no experience. So… expect trials, tears and hopefully triumphs along the way.
We will take this one day at a time. Bring it on!
Join us as we work through each and every challenge. We are hoping that you will subscribe and share our story with your friends and family as we embark on this awesome adventure.
