Off grid private island – We did NOT see this coming!
As we embark on this exciting new chapter of our lives, we are thrilled to share our journey of building an off-grid private island homestead. Our first challenge? Getting to the island itself! We’ve heard the road to the lake can be incredibly rough, and there may still be ice on the lake. But these obstacles don’t deter us; we’re ready to tackle whatever it takes to reach our new home.

Our First Look at the Island
We loaded up our boat and truck, ready for our big day. After a night in our homebase, we were brimming with excitement as we set off on the long journey towards the island we had never seen. We came upon a hunting lodge across from our island, and we felt like kids on Christmas morning, eager for our first glimpse. Using a drone, we managed to capture stunning aerial views, revealing the beauty of our island for the very first time.

Our new neighbor, the lodge owner, was friendly and accommodating. He even offered to help us launch our skiff into the water directly across from the island. We were fortunate to have such a supportive neighbor as we prepared to explore our new home.

Boating Through the Clouds
As we navigated the lake, the ice was breaking up, and we finally made our way to the island. The excitement was palpable as we saw the lush trees and serene waters. We couldn’t wait to start clearing the land and envisioning the future of our homestead.

Upon arriving, we were greeted by the peaceful sounds of nature. We knew we had a lot of cleanup to do, but the potential for our new life was already apparent. The beauty of the surroundings was breathtaking, and we felt an immediate connection to the land.

Setting Up Camp
Our first order of business was to clear a little spot to set up our lawn chairs and start a fire with a ferro rod. We brought wieners to roast over the campfire, and even though we were novices at fire starting, we were determined to make it work.

With some patience and guidance from our experiences, we successfully got the fire going. Sitting by the fire, we reflected on how far we had come and how this island felt like the perfect place for us to start our new life.

Exploring Our New Home
The next day, we were eager to explore the island further. There were rumors of wild asparagus growing along the shore, and we couldn’t wait to forage for it. Our neighbor had mentioned that it tastes better than store-bought asparagus when sautéed with butter, salt, and pepper.

As we walked around, we were amazed by the diverse flora and the promise of building our greenhouse. The long daylight hours of May meant we could maximize our solar energy use, which was essential for our off-grid lifestyle.

Although we were tired after our long trip, we were happy and grateful for this opportunity. We had so much to explore and learn about our new home, and we knew this was just the beginning of an incredible journey.
