How Did This Happen?
It all began when we were searching for property. One day, I received an email from my sister, suggesting I take a look at an opportunity to buy an island. After seeing it, I instantly knew it was perfect for us! However, there was one catch: there were multiple offers on the property. Determined to secure it, we decided to remove all subjects, meaning we bought it without ever seeing it. That’s right, we bought an island sight unseen!
One Small Problem…
Of course, with an island comes its own set of challenges. We need to figure out how to get to it, especially since we have to transport building materials. We’ve already purchased a shed to store our tools and supplies, and we’re considering building a barge to facilitate access to the island.

Solutions for Power Needs…
Living off-grid means we need to think about our power needs. We are looking into solar panels and wood heat, along with possibly wind energy. We’re also consulting with a marine architect to explore the best options for building a barge to transport materials. The planning stages are crucial, and we’re excited to see how everything unfolds!

So Many Unknowns…
As we prepare for our trip to the island, many questions linger. What is the elevation of the island? What will the weather be like? Are there bears or cougars? What about wolves!? We’re using tools like Google Earth to gather information about the land, but until we set foot on it, there’s still a lot we don’t know.

Now Here’s… Opal!
As we embark on this journey, we’re also excited to introduce our dog, Opal! She will be a big part of our new life on the island, and we can’t wait to share her adventures with you. We hope you’ll join us as we document our experiences and challenges in building our off-grid homestead.
