Exploring abandoned off grid cabins on our island!

Our first task was just getting over to the island. We heard that the road to the lake is incredibly rough. We were also told that there could still be ice on the lake. Those things didn’t matter to us, because always do whatever it takes. We think we are prepared for the challenge of off-grid living, but we really have no idea what it will take to make it happen. Trouble on the Water!

Hms icebreaker!

This is us working as icebreakers! We took our boat out, carefully navigating through the remaining ice. It was a wild ride, but we werer determined and Melodi was leaning over the bow smashing the ice with an axe! Thankfully, our little boat was not damaged by the ice.

There’s something magical about the stillness of nature, especially when you’re out on a lake, surrounded by the beauty of the wilderness. Our first campfire was a perfect moment to soak in the serene atmosphere, and with the ice melting away, we were ready for smooth sailing ahead.

While exploring, we were delighted to encounter a wild fox. It was a sweet little creature that came quite close, and it was heartwarming to see wildlife thriving in this remote area.

Upon reaching the island, we quickly noticed the abundance of deadfall caused by a beetle infestation. There were plenty of trees, and while it would take a ton of work to clear the area, we would never ever want for firewood!

Finally, we approached the cabin we had seen on Google Earth. It was a mix of excitement and sadness to see it in person, as it had once been a beautiful home but was now abandoned and in disrepair. It was completely empty, except for an old fridge and stove.

As we continued our exploration, we discovered remnants of other cabins on the island. It seemed like a small community had once thrived here, and it was fun to imagine what life might have been like all those years ago.

What on Earth is That… a Crocodile?

We stumbled upon some strange bones, which sparked curiosity and a bit of concern. Melodi mused that these might be crocodile bones! What could have happened here? It was a fascinating discovery that added to the island’s mystery.

Another Treasure Found!

Our exploration led us to another treasure, which looked like it could have been used to drag logs from the forest for the cabin build. We wondered how it even came to be on this island. This old Mark 1 Land Rover filled us with ideas about potential restoration.

Our Vision is Coming Together

Planning for the future

As we wrapped up our exploration, we felt invigorated by the possibilities. Our vision for building on the island was becoming clearer, and we were excited about the future. We reflected on the history of the island and the family that once called it home. We decided to honor their legacy by keeping the island’s name, a tribute to their heritage.
