Watch Our Barge Makeover as We Prep for Our Maiden Voyage
We’re excited to share our experiences as we work on our barge makeover, preparing for its maiden voyage to our newly named private island, Bird Island. We faced various challenges, including rust removal and repainting, but with the help of some incredible new friends, we’ve made great progress. Join us as we recount the steps we’ve taken and the wonderful people we’ve met along the way!

Meet Clara, who lived on the island as a child!
As we began our barge makeover, we had the pleasure of meeting Clara Jack, a former resident of the island. Clara shared her childhood memories and insights about the island, which inspired us to honor her family’s history by keeping the name of our new home – Bird Island. It was heartwarming to learn about the island’s past and the memories tied to this beautiful place.
We begin prepping the barge for its maiden voyage
The barge is only 2 years old, but required some TLC. So before we can put the barge in the water, it will need to be cleaned and painted. We gathered our supplies and set to work, excited to see the transformation unfold. We then met Gil, an experienced millwright, who graciously offered us some welcome advice.
Ramps are a problem, time for Plan B
As we began to install ramps for easier access to the barge, we quickly realized the ramps were heavier than expected. Kerry, another new friend, offered to help with his tractor, but unfortunately, it didn’t quite have the reach we needed. It was time to think creatively and devise a Plan B!
Ryan vs the Generator
To power our tools, we had purchased a 12kW generator at auction, but getting it started proved to be a bit of a challenge. It required a little assembly, and Ryan faced a few hiccups which were the result of not reading the manual! When if failed to start, Gil wandered over and with a wave of his hand, the generator started which kept us moving forward.
What were we thinking?
Looking back at our ambitious plans, we couldn’t help but chuckle at the reality of our situation. With Ryan’s elbow injury and Melodi’s back issues, we appreciated the kindness and support from our new friends in the community. Without their help, we would likely still be on the shore of that boat ramp!
When all else fails, try a BIGGER hammer!
As we tackled the installation of the ramps, we encountered some stubborn pins. With a bit of improvisation and a bigger hammer, we were able to fit the first ramp. The second ramp proved more difficult, so Gil and another new friend, Chris (that makes THREE today!) took the pin back to his shop and dressed it with a grinder, tapering it so it would fit through the metal bracket.
Like a Glove!
After overcoming the challenges of the ramp installation, we finally succeeded! With Gil on the loader and Chris helping Ryan locate the pin, it all came together. It was a relief to see the ramps installed, thanks to the incredible teamwork and assistance we received from our neighbors.

With the ramps in place, it was time to give the barge a fresh coat of paint. Melodi donned a hazmat suit to tackle the task. Painting the barge provided instant gratification, and it was quite fulfilling to know it would soon be on its first voyage.
A welcome end to a L-O-N-G day
After a long day of hard work, we settled down in our tent for the night, reflecting on our achievements and the kindness of the community. We felt grateful to be surrounded by such beauty, and to learn that the people here are so kind and helpful.
As we prepare for our maiden voyage, we are excited about the future and all the possibilities that await us on Bird Island. We can’t wait to share more of our journey with you!
