Outsmarting Wildfires: Epic Trout Catch & Cook Adventure

In this catch and cook episode, an impromptu fishing excursion “netted” a nice big surprise! Like, WAY BIG. In other news, 2023 was a historical year for forest fires in BC, and the air was super smokey so we ducked out to pick up respirators. While boating back to the island we decided to try a little trout fishing. What ensued was an awesome catch and cook experience!

The Remarkable Changing Lake Level

We started our day by clearing some underbrush around our property. Cleaning the area around the cabin not only makes it safer but also enhances our access to the main building site. The changing lake levels are fascinating; during spring, the snowmelt can raise the water level by 8 to 10 feet. By summer, the outflow rivers have done their job, revealing acres of extra beach front for us to enjoy until the late fall.

Super Smokey Skies!

As we worked, we noticed the skies were becoming increasingly smoky due to nearby wildfires. The air quality was declining, and we decided it was time to get some respirators to stay safe. Even though we were a safe distance from the fires, the smoke was thick and acrid, making it hard to breathe.

Smores!

While we couldn’t have a traditional campfire due to the fire ban, we reminisced about the time our family was up visiting and we all enjoyed some s’mores around the fire. Those were good times… and the s’mores were a twist on the classic, thanks to a new recipe Melodi learned. Even though we are currently in a campfire ban, we at least can turn to the memories of twilight laughter by the fire.

Melodi Hooks a BIG One!

As we headed back to the cabin, we decided to try our luck at fishing. No sooner had we dropped our lines when Melodi hooked a massive lake trout! This was not just any fish; it was the biggest catch we had ever seen. We were ecstatic! This catch would be perfect for our catch and cook fishing trout experience.

Into the Frying Pan…

After catching the big trout, we quickly prepared it for cooking. Using a fish skinner tool made the process smoother. We seasoned it with lemon and onions for a delicious flavor. The smell wafting through our off grid cabin was incredible. We are just loving this wilderness lifestyle! Sitting down to enjoy our super fresh catch was a highlight of our day.

Conclusion

Recalling the events of the day make us realize how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful place where we can enjoy off grid living and the bounty of nature. Despite the challenges posed by the wildfires, we found joy in fishing and cooking together. It’s a reminder that even in difficult times, there’s always a silver lining to be found.
