Building an Off Grid Bathroom – Tool Shed Makeover

We live in the wilderness on our very own 62 acre island. We were thinking… just because we live in the wilderness doesn’t mean that we have to get rid of all the comforts we are used to. We felt it might be a good idea to build an off grid ‘luxury’ bathroom. When you compare it with the home depot bucket potty we were using when we first arrived, this truly is luxury! We converted our tool shed into an wonderful wilderness oasis, complete with sink, shower, change-area and an amazing incinerator toilet! We love this bathroom and we wanted to share the outcome with all of you! Come along and see how we managed to build this off grid bathroom.

Ablutions? What are ablutions?

As we dive into this project, we can’t help but get excited about our evening rituals. Melodi loves doing her evening ablutions—the process of cleaning up and preparing for bed. This involves washing her face, moisturizing, and brushing her teeth. The joy of having a dedicated space for this is something we are really looking forward to. It’s all about that little prep before getting into bed, right?

The Plan

Our vision is clear: we are converting our tool shed into a full-fledged bathroom, complete with a sink and shower. This little shed has served us well in the past, even as a temporary bedroom, and now it’s time for it to take on a new role. We’re excited to start pulling things out, cleaning up and preparing for this transformation.

Cutting the Drain Hole

One of the first tasks we tackled was cutting the drain hole for the shower. This was a bit nerve-wracking, but also thrilling! It’s essential to get this right to ensure proper drainage. We knew we had to do it, but it’s always a little daunting to cut holes in your structure. With the right tools and a bit of courage, we made it happen!

Backer Board for the Hot Water System

Next up was installing the backer board for our hot water system. This is crucial for mounting our Joolca hot water system, which is a propane-powered on-demand haot water unit. We love this system because it provides us with weeks of hot water showers. It’s perfect for our off grid lifestyle, and we can’t wait to have it up and running!

There is Much Carnage Going On…

As with any DIY project, things can get a bit messy. We had tools, materials, and a bit of chaos as we worked to get everything fitted together. But amidst the carnage, there is a sense of satisfaction in watching our vision come to life.

Singing in the Shower

Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for: the shower is installed! It looks fantastic, and we can’t help but imagine the joy of taking a hot shower in our new wilderness oasis. We even joked about singing in the shower—it’s going to be such a treat to enjoy this luxury in the woods!

As we wrap up this project, we are thrilled with how our off grid bathroom has turned out. It’s a beautiful blend of functionality and comfort, and we can’t wait to enjoy it fully.
