We are Starting to Clear Land – by Hand! Where Do We Begin?

We are now starting to clear some of this raw land by hand. It is a daunting task, where do we begin? We need to clear land to make room for a metal building that we are picking up this week.

Checking out the Old Homestead

We prepared to explore another part of the island, specifically where the Bird family homestead is located. The goal is to start clearing land for offloading materials we gathered from across Canada. As we navigate around the camp, we consider potential spots for building a road or a clearing for our new shed. Tomorrow, we embark on a journey to pick up our storage shed, and we’ll need a clear spot to place it upon our return.

The Bird Family Cabin

The Bird family home, a beautiful childhood haven, is at risk of collapsing. We hope to salvage parts of it for our new cabin. The poplar trees nearby, possibly infested with worms, add to our tasks as we begin starting to clear land by hand.

A Spot for the Metal Building

Finding a suitable location for our metal building requires vision. We identify a potential spot, though it requires significant clearing. Enlisting help from family who know how to fell trees, we plan to also clear dead trees, many of which have succumbed to beetle infestations. With a plan in place, we feel optimistic about this off grid homestead project.

Wind Storm

As we brace for an incoming storm, we take precautions to secure the camp. Despite the challenges, we remain focused on our goals, hoping that this little shelter will withstand the harsh winds of the Northern Canadian wilderness.

Melodi takes on brush cutting with her trusty Husqvarna, making significant progress in clearing the area. It’s hard work, but seeing the land open up is rewarding. We’re grateful for the tools we have, as we beging to tackle clearing land land by ourselves.

Cooking at the Makeshift Kitchen

After a long day of work, we retreat to our makeshift kitchen. Simple meals over the campfire remind us of the joys of real life while wilderness living. Our dog Opal enjoys the feast too, even if it means sneakily grabbing a glove or two!

Making Plans by the Fireside

By the fireside, we discuss logistics for the coming days. Moving equipment and planning trails are on the agenda. The evening’s tranquility offers a moment to reflect on our progress and the adventures ahead.

In the fight against mosquitoes, we consider innovative solutions like the laser mosquito fence. While it sounds futuristic, anything that helps in the wilderness is welcome. It’s these small comforts that make the off-grid experience unique.
