How to Restore Antique Wood Stoves for Off Grid Cabins
We’re excited to share our latest endeavor: sourcing wood stoves for our off-grid cabins. You might wonder why we’re talking about cabins in the plural. The plan is to eventually build multiple cabins on our island, providing a cozy retreat for our friends and family. As we dive into this process, we’re focusing on selecting the right wood stoves to suit our needs.

Picking up our Flat Bed Trailer
We embarked on a long trip to pick up a barge that we purchased in another province. After being couped up inside the truck for so long, Opal was really happy about us stopping so she could run around and stretch her legs. Once back on the road, we stopped to pick up a 28.5-foot gooseneck trailer capable of carrying 21,000 lbs, which was the perfect size to haul the barge. This trailer is a critical component of our equipment list for our new wilderness lifestyle.
Picking up our Vintage Wood Stoves
While driving to pickup the trailer, we used our phone to participate in an online auction. We bought a few vintage wood stoves that caught our eye. These stoves will need some refurbishing, but we believe they have great potential for our cabins. It was cool to learn of the history of these stoves. We found a company to refurbish them for us, so after a short detour to collect them, we were back on the road to drop them off.
Visiting Vintage Stove Restorations
Our next stop was in Didsbury Alberta, to visit Vintage Stove Restoration. The owner, Shane McDonald, has an incredible depth of knowledge about antique stoves and what is required to properly restore them. It was astounding to see how he transforms rusted metal into beautiful, functional pieces. We were confident that we found the right man for the job.
Incredibly Beautiful Antique Wood Stoves!
Shane showcased many stunning antique stoves, each with unique characteristics. His craftsmanship was evident as he described the work he does to restore these stoves, turning them into stunning pieces of art. The before-and-after transformations were truly remarkable.
The Highly Collectible “Base Burner” circa 1896
One of the standout pieces was a “Base Burner” from 1896. Shane explained how this stove captures heat efficiently and can be a beautiful addition to any home. We were amazed by the history and craftsmanship involved in the restoration of these antique wood stoves.
The Ultimate Vintage Stove Boneyard
As we explored further, we stumbled upon a boneyard filled with parts from a vast number of vintage stoves. Shane has a virtual treasure trove of components here that he can use to restore any stove you bring to him. The sheer volume and variety of parts were mind-blowing!
Vintage Barber Chair?
Among the stoves, we also saw a beautifully restored vintage barber chair, showcasing Shane’s talent in various crafts. It was a delightful surprise to see such a unique piece in his collection.
Next Stop: Pickup up our Barge
With our stoves left in capable hands for restoration, our next mission is to continue on our cross country trip to pickup our barge. We can’t wait to see how everything comes together!
We are eager to share the final results of our restored wood stoves once they’re ready. The process has been a learning experience, and we’re excited about creating a cozy, off-grid environment in our future cabins.
