Exploring Hidden Places in Our Island Forest
Today, we are finally getting the chance to explore those hidden bare places found in our island forest! Many people have asked us if we’ve ventured into those unusual-looking clearings hidden deep within the woods of our remote off-grid island homestead. Until now, we just haven’t had the time, but today we are making time and are excited to uncover what lies within. So come along with us as we investigate these mysterious spots in our island forest!

Starting the Day Off Right!
As we prepared for our exploration, we started with some delicious breakfast in our ultra-luxury kitchen. Melodi whipped up a couple of eggs, and we talked about how our cooking setup has transformed from campfire cooking to a more comfortable experience with our new cook stove. It’s been a game changer for us!
Huge Split in Base of Tree
Before heading out, we noticed a concerning split in a massive tree near our cabin. We discussed the potential danger it posed, especially if the winds picked up. Ryan had a plan to safely remove the branches using the Kubota and a chainsaw, but Melodi was understandably cautious about the risks involved.
Drone Recon Mission of Mystery Areas
After our prep, we launched a drone to scout the area. We were particularly interested in two clearings: the larger one appeared to be a basin that collected spring meltwater, while the smaller one looked like it could be swampy. We were excited to see what new discoveries might be hiding there!
Unexpected Discoveries
Upon arriving at the larger clearing, we were surprised by its lushness. Instead of being swampy, it turned out to be a soft, spongy area filled with mosses and tall grasses. We realized this could potentially be a perfect spot for a protected greenhouse, as it was quiet and completely shielded from the wind.
Safety First
As we made our way through the forest, we encountered various hazards, including fallen trees and prickly bushes. We reminded ourselves to always prioritize safety, especially when exploring such rugged terrain. We also noted the need to wear gloves next time to avoid cuts and scrapes.
