As a couple trying to develop our island homestead, this was by FAR the hardest day ever — we were stranded on our private island with no way off!! The hardest part of it was that our truck was also on the island and even if we could get off… our truck couldn’t and we would be stranded in the wilderness on the other side. Breaking the Bad News…
We began our day optimistic, ready to tackle our tasks. However, the moment of truth hit us hard: the truck was on the island, and the barge was not operating. Ryan dropped the drive sleeve and it is now resting on the bottom of the lake. We were now officially stranded on our island with no way off! The realization that we’d be stuck here if we couldn’t find a solution was daunting. Who could have believed this could happen? It was a sobering moment that shifted our focus towards self-rescue.
Gathering Rescue Tools – McGyver Style!
With the situation becoming dire, we began brainstorming ways to retrieve the part of the prop that had fallen into the lake. We were determined to find a solution using what we had on hand. The idea of using a lantern to illuminate the water became our first plan. It was a bit of a bushcraft moment, necessitating creativity and resourcefulness as we assembled a collection of rescue tools.
Situation Critical…
The waves were rough, and the winds were fierce. Our plan was contingent on the weather conditions. We had to devise a method to access the water safely. The urgency of the situation became apparent as we realized that without the prop, we wouldn’t be able to leave the island. Our cabin life was turning into a precarious situation, and we had to act fast.
Oh the Pain of It All…
As we prepared for the retrieval, the intense physical discomfort of the cold water loomed over us. It was a moment of truth, and the pain of the icy water was something we had to face. Our determination was tested, and we knew we had to dive in to retrieve the lost prop. The real life struggle of living off grid was becoming “real” during this unexpected trial.

However, my reticence about getting into the water was met with playful chatisement from Melodi. During these challenging moments, I found strength in my resolve. The determination to rescue the prop was powerful, and I was ready to take the plunge. This was not just about retrieving a piece for the motor; it was about proving to ourselves that we could overcome obstacles. Living on an island has its trials, but it also teaches resilience.
A Valiant Effort – Really.
She didn’t understand how cold the water was, and figured she could get in no problem and retrieve the drive sleeve. As we took turns attempting the retrieval, the cold water was brutal. It was a test of endurance and teamwork. The effort put in was valiant, and while the outcome was uncertain, we knew we were giving it our all. Every attempt brought us closer to our goal, showcasing the spirit of off grid living and our commitment to our homestead.
It’s Just Impossible Without a Mask!!
After several attempts, we realized that visibility was a major issue. Without a mask, it was nearly impossible to see the bottom of the lake. But with determination and grit, we continued our mission, and finally, with the camera we located the part!
In the end, we managed to retrieve the drive sleeve, and it was a huge relief. It was a day filled with unexpected challenges, but it brought us closer together as a couple. We learned valuable lessons about problem-solving and resilience in the face of adversity.
