Welcome! We are excited to share our journey of living off grid and building a homestead that embraces a simpler lifestyle. As a retired couple from the city, we are complete novices in wilderness living, especially on an island. However, we are dedicated and hard-working, ready to tackle whatever comes our way. Join us as we learn how to live off grid, focusing on fire, shelter, water, food, and power. High on our priority list is constructing a cozy tiny cabin to keep our spirits high as we navigate this new lifestyle.

Every night on the island is serene, with calm glassy waters. We can’t wait for summer, when the days are long, and the sun sets late. This island, a gift from my daughter, is where we plan to thread our new life. It’s beautiful here, and as we prepare to fish, we realize the smallest things in life bring us joy.
Starting a Fire Without a Match
As we delve into our off-grid lifestyle, we quickly realize that starting a fire without matches is a skill we need to master. With determination, we try various methods, learning from our mistakes and helping each other along the way. It’s a learning curve, but we’re excited to figure it out together.
What Animal Skull Was That?
During our exploration, we come across an animal skull, which sparks a discussion about local wildlife. We speculate it might belong to a baby moose and ponder how it ended up here. This curiosity about nature is part of what makes living off grid so rewarding.
Let’s Get Some Cocoa Action
As the day winds down, we decide to treat ourselves to some hot cocoa by the fire. There’s something incredibly comforting about sharing warm drinks while surrounded by nature. We reflect on our day, enjoying the warmth of the fire and the peaceful ambiance of the island.
A Huge Beaver Says Hello
In a surprising turn of events, we spot a beaver swimming nearby. Initially mistaking it for a log, we laugh at our excitement when we realize it’s an actual beaver! Yes, there is an abundance of wildlife that we will be sharing this beautiful island with.
Saying Goodbye for Now
As our first trip to the island comes to an end, we say goodbye to a new friend. Melodi and I take time to reflect on the experiences we’ve just shared. We’ve encountered challenges but also incredible moments of joy and discovery. We have a long list of projects to tackle, including finding power options and setting up a water system. We’re grateful for this opportunity and look forward to sharing more of our journey with you!
