Transforming our Off Grid Tiny Cabin with Insulation

We are finally adding insulation to our off grid tiny cabin! We are so excited for our tiny cabin to be warmer and quieter. With triple-paned glass and now insulation, we can barely hear the generator anymore. This insulation has rendered our off grid tiny cabin super snug – and we love it!

Insulating Windows

We started by sealing up the windows to eliminate any air gaps using expanding foam. This is key to prevent drafts from entering the cabin. We had a few cans left over from our last trip, and we made sure to cover all the little spaces. The windows are really amazing; they allow us to enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding Canadian wilderness while keeping our cabin snug.

Watermelon at the Water’s Edge

After sealing the windows, we took a break to enjoy some watermelon by the water. This is living, and one of the reasons why we love lake living so much. While Ryan was busy with the wiring, I was thrilled to enjoy the clean air and the beautiful surroundings. Moments like these make living off the grid truly special.

Insulating the Walls – What a Difference!

Moving on to the walls, we used RockWool insulation, which is mineral-based and helps with soundproofing. This type of insulation creates a snug environment, deadening sound significantly. We were amazed at how much quieter the cabin became once we installed it. It was one of those immediate gratification type of jobs that made a noticeable difference right away.

Blocking the Top of the Walls

Next, we focused on blocking the top of the walls. This part was essential to ensure that the insulation remains effective. We nailed in the blocking, which will allow us to fully insulate the ceiling later. It’s exciting to see how each of these steps moves us farther along our gant chart of our off grid build project.

Looking for Saskatoons at Berry Point

After all the hard work, we took some time to explore and look for saskatoons. Although we didn’t find as many as we expected, it was still a delightful excursion. Being surrounded by nature and being able to forage is one of the joys of living off the grid. Any day on the water boating around our little island is a good day!
