Captain Opal!

We love sharing the small moments that make island life feel like home. Our little dog Opal has gone from timid pup to the fearless “captain” of our boat — she now rides along as we check the shoreline, the barge, and the berry patches. Those moments of quiet and curiosity are as much a part of building infrastructure as the plumbing and solar gear.
Opal’s confidence reminds us why we do this: creating a place where our family (and dog) can thrive. While we were checking Berry Point for Saskatoons, we found an absolute bounty—perfect for jam and preserves later this season.
Uh Oh… What Happened to the Greenhouse?

One afternoon we discovered the greenhouse looking withered and sad. The culprit turned out not to be drought or disease but a simple configuration problem: our watering system had been set to water weekly instead of daily. That tiny instruction made a huge difference.
Fixing that was straightforward, but the moment reinforced how important a reliable, automated water supply is on an island homestead. That’s what motivated us to finalize our off-grid filtered system so plants, dishes, and showers would be safe and worry-free.
Water system design overview

We designed a system that’s simple, robust, and entirely solar-powered. At a glance: a solar-fed control box powers a motor that drives a pump. The pump pushes raw water into a pressure tank, then through a series of filters (spin-downs and sediment), into a carbon block filter to remove color and smell, and finally through a UV unit to neutralize biological contaminants.
We wanted an arrangement that lets us sample untreated water, bypass the UV if needed, and verify water quality at multiple points. This setup gives us both a practical solution and peace of mind: it’s a true off-grid SafeWaterSystem that supports our entire homestead.
Connecting the pump to the motor

One of the satisfying parts of the build was matching pump to motor. The pump has a sand filter and spline receiver that lines up with splines on the motor. We took care to seat the rubber boot correctly and to ensure gaskets were properly placed. Small details — like orienting plastic so wires won’t abrade — make a big difference in longevity.
We followed a few practical rules: use Teflon tape wrapped in the tightening direction, tighten national pipe thread fittings snugly but not forcefully, and use the correct compression fittings for inch-and-a-quarter pipe. These steps ensured a leak-free and durable connection from pump to pressure tank.
Putting All the Pieces Together

To assemble everything neatly, we mounted the entire filtration circuit on a sheet of plywood cut to size. Laying components out horizontally before final installation gave us perspective and made plumbing with 1″ PEX tubing much easier. Once complete, the board can be screw-mounted to the inverter room wall and, later, moved indoors if needed.

Our filtration is a five-stage flow: a 500-micron spin-down, a 140-micron spin-down, a 50-micron sediment filter, a carbon block, and a UV sterilizer. The UV controller is mounted higher than any water to avoid electrical issues. The UV unit uses a flow sensor so it only runs when water is moving and includes a monitoring dome to ensure the lamp is operating effectively.
We focused on quality at every connection. For crimped PEX joints we used the right crimping tools and sized rings properly — squeezing rings with pliers is a recipe for future leaks. With careful assembly and a few tests outdoors (so we didn’t flood the shed), the plumbing side became 100% installed. This is an off-grid OffGridWater system that gives us safe water for dishes, showers, and drinking.

Between the work and the wiring, island life still gifts us spectacular evenings. Melodi’s Voyage Back to the Island

Melodi flew back to meet us with another load of gear. Small planes, trailers, and timing all factor into island logistics — getting parts and tools to a remote site takes planning. We coordinated pickups, strapped gear, and even involved the kids in loading to make sure everything arrived safely.
With the plumbing done and the electrical pending, we took a brief moment to celebrate. The water line runs were completed and we left extra length in the inch-and-a-quarter pipe in case we decide to relocate the pressure tank later. It’s built to last through winter and to be serviceable when we want to upgrade.
