When a Huge Tree Crashes Onto Our Cabin: An Unexpected Adventure

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of living off the grid, especially when it comes to tackling challenges that come with maintaining an old cabin. Recently, we faced a significant decision regarding our dilapidated cabin, which had fallen victim to dry rot over the years. Instead of using our Kubota to pull it down—a risky endeavor—we decided to take a more adventurous route. We enlisted the help of a faller to drop a huge tree onto the cabin, hoping to flatten it in one go. The results were unexpected and a bit surprising!

Amazing Production Falling…

As we prepared for the tree to fall, we couldn’t help but marvel at the skill of the faller, Alan. He was a machine, swiftly taking down trees that threatened our living space. The sound of falling trees echoed through the area, a loud reminder of the power of nature. With each tree that came down, we felt a sense of relief as the area became safer. Little did we know, the main event was still ahead.

Saying Goodbye to the Old Cabin

Before the big moment, we took a moment to reflect on our old cabin. It had been a part of our lives for years, a charming relic of the past. However, it was clear that it had degraded beyond repair. The structure was leaning dangerously, and we knew it was time to say goodbye. We snapped one last shot of the cabin, a bittersweet farewell as we prepared for the final act.

Pepper Raises the Roof

As we positioned ourselves for the tree to fall, we felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. Would the plan work? Would the tree crush the cabin as intended? Alan began the cut, and the anticipation grew. With a loud crash, the massive tree hit the cabin—but instead of the expected collapse, it bounced off! We were all taken by surprise. The cabin stood, albeit with some additional damage. So it was time for “Plan B,” and Pepper stepped in to take the cabin down…

Huge Leaning Poplar Needs to Come Down

We were surprised that our initial attempt to flatten the cabin failed. We thought that old cabin really didn’t want to come down. It was certainly battered, but it was still standing. It was a sad day as we acknowledged that this structure, which had stood for 85 years, was now in tatters and was truly a danger. Pepper was sent in to clear the cabin site and make it safe and salvage what he could. With that underway, we now shifted our focus to a large leaning poplar that needed to come down. This was the final tree to fall this day.

In the end, it was a day filled with mixed emotions. We were grateful for the help of skilled professionals and the lessons learned throughout this unique experience. As we move forward, we remain committed to building our dream homestead, one step at a time and we are excited about the possibilities ahead.
