Life on a remote wilderness island means building everything from the ground up, and today we’re tackling a new off grid project—building a new road to expand our homestead! With new cabins planned and more space needed, it’s time to carve out better access routes and make the most of our wild terrain.

Unexpected Storm and Assessing Damage
We experienced a wild storm that had us worried about our new fruit trees. It’s essential to ensure they’re in a more protected environment. Clarence from the garden center advised us to plant them in the ground for better growth. For now, they’ll stay in the greenhouse, but we know they’ll need to be grounded soon.
Moving Trees to the Greenhouse
As we prepare for future projects, we’re also thinking about aesthetics. We’ve got a bunch of solar lanterns to set up and gravel to lay down to help walk safely at night. It gets REALLY dark out here!! This will also help keep our living space organized and functional.
Melodi Heads Off-Island
With Melodi off to Vancouver for an important appointment, I’m tasked with holding down the fort. This means taking care of the homestead while she’s away, which includes some exciting surprises!
A Surprise for Melodi
While Melodi is away, I decided to surprise her by building a new road to facilitate easier access to our future projects. This new route will help clear existing debris and prepare space for the new cabins we plan to erect for family visits this summer.
Exploring the Ruins of the Adjacent Cabin
Upon returning, Melodi was shocked to see the transformation. The old cabin site next door required significant clearing out before we could build anything new. It was fascinating, almost archaeological, digging through the rubble and discovering layers of history within our land.
Ugh… The Barge is Grounded
Transporting materials to the island is always a challenge, especially when the barge gets grounded. We had to maneuver the truck carefully to balance the barge and ensure we could unload our supplies without issues. Each trip is a reminder of how complex off grid living can be!
As we continue to expand our homestead on this remote island, the focus on building roads is essential for wilderness access road construction. Having the right infrastructure is key to homestead expansion and self-sufficient living.
