Building a One-of-a-Kind Raised Solar Panel Platform
We’re excited to share our latest project: a unique solar panel platform with integrated storage below, designed for our off-grid lifestyle on our private island. This platform features a raised ground mount with integrated storage space below, creating a practical solution for maximizing both energy production and storage.

How Many Panels Can We Mount?
We started by determining how many solar panels we could fit on our platform. Initially, we thought eight would be sufficient, but Ryan had the idea to potentially mount twelve panels, arranging them in two vertical stacks. This would allow us to maximize our power generation.

How the Structure Will Be Supported
The support structure consists of footings that are buried between one and two feet deep. This ensures stability for the platform, which will hold the solar panels above while providing storage space underneath.

Making Sure the Posts are Plumb
As the posts went up, we made sure they were plumb and secured on cement pads. This attention to detail is crucial for the longevity and safety of the platform.

Ledgers, Joists, and Plywood Decking
Once the posts were secured, we moved on to attach the ledgers and install the joists and plywood decking. Ryan fastened a temporary support underneath the ledgers to support the joists while he arranged them and nailed them in place.

How Much Solar Power Will We Have?
With the structure taking shape, we discussed our energy needs. With the capacity to install up to twelve panels, we anticipate this platform will produce 6,600 watts of solar power, which, when added to the panels we have on the beach, will bring our cumulative maximum solar production to over 12,000 watts!

How to Stiffen the Structure
To prevent wobbling, we implemented diagonal bracing between the supporting posts of the platform. Doing so creates a series of triangles, which are very strong. In fact, the triangle is the strongest and most stable geometric shape for building. That’s why bridge girders are a series of triangles all connected together.

Additional Bracing to Stop Lateral Flex
We added even more bracing to stop lateral flex, ensuring the platform would withstand various weather conditions. That’s right, we added more triangles!

Melodi Trims a Post Top
As a final touch, Melodi used a chainsaw to trim the tops of the posts, ensuring a perfect fit for the plywood. Her skill with tools shines through in this project!

We’re thrilled with the progress on our unique solar panel platform. It’s not just about gathering energy; it’s about creating a homestead that’s practical and efficient. We can’t wait to see how it all comes together!
