Big Trouble Ahead – Will We Sink or Swim?
This has easily been the biggest challenge of our lives. After re-prioritizing, we realized we had to leave the island for a month to gather more supplies. Upon returning, we found big trouble at the island. I don’t want to give it away here, but it is major big-time trouble and could stop all hope of building on the island for the rest of the year.

Yikes… Turned Too Sharp!
We encountered big trouble at the island right from the start. As we were on our way, a flat tire and a wild storm tested our patience. Just as we thought we were back on track, a sharp turn at a rest stop left our trailer precariously balanced on the bumper. Thankfully, a kind stranger named Daryl came to our rescue with an impact gun and a jack, helping us get back on the road.
The Water Receded… the Barge is GROUNDED!
Upon returning to the island, we found our barge completely grounded due to receding water levels. This was a major big trouble at the island since without the barge, transporting supplies was impossible. Fortunately, with the help of some generous lakeside residents, we managed to wiggle and pull the barge back into the water, avoiding a halt in our plans to build an off grid cabin.
Loaded and Ready to Go
With the barge floating again, we loaded it with the lumber needed for our projects. Our plans for a tiny cabin, which would shelter us during our ongoing projects, were back on track. The lumber would soon be transformed into a cozy off grid cabin that would shield us from the elements.
Picking up the Excavator
Next, we embarked on a seven-hour round trip to pick up an excavator. This piece of equipment is crucial for clearing land for our cabin. Despite a minor hiccup with a broken ramp tab, the team at Finning helped us fix it, ensuring everything was in order for our return to the island.
Harsh Winds Fill the Boat with Water!
As we navigated back to the island, harsh winds threatened to fill our boat with water. This was another big trouble at the island moment, but we managed to keep afloat. Our little tag-along boat, used mainly for fishing, kept pace despite the challenging conditions.
I’m the Queen of the World!
In the end, standing triumphantly on the barge, I felt like the queen of the world. Despite the big trouble at the island we faced, our determination and the kindness of others helped us overcome each obstacle. Our adventure continues as we work toward building our dream off grid homestead.
