Riverdance?

As we dive into our Off Grid Greenhouse Build, we realize just how much manual labor this project requires. Getting the foundation right is pretty important, and we’ve settled on a sturdy 10×16-foot footprint. This will allow us to grow a variety of plants while being mindful of the harsh weather conditions we face in the Canadian wilderness.

First Wall Goes UP

With the groundwork finished, it’s time to raise the walls. Each wall will be constructed in one complete piece, making the structure more stable. We’re excited about the height of the greenhouse, allowing for tall plants like peas and cucumbers to thrive. This DIY Greenhouse Construction is not only about building a structure, but also about creating a sustainable food source.

A Dessert to Die For!

After a hard day’s work, Melodi prepares a delightful dessert. Fresh raspberries drizzled with chocolate and caramel over whipped cream… an absolute dream reward for our labor. This is just a taste of the fresh produce we hope to grow in our greenhouse for self-sufficiency.

A Welcome Hand from the Little Lady

As we work together, we recognize how essential teamwork is in this off-grid lifestyle. Melodi is a great helper, and her enthusiasm makes the process enjoyable. Having a partner to share this experience with makes our wilderness homestead a fulfilling endeavor.

Throughout this process, we are learning about sustainable gardening in grow zone 3B. This means we must select plants that can thrive in our specific climate. The journey to self-sufficiency requires patience and experimentation, and we are eager to explore our food options as we figure out what works and what doesn’t.

We plan to implement an off-grid irrigation system using a water tank we acquired a couple of years ago. By placing it uphill, we can utilize gravity to water our plants, controlled by a solar-powered timer. This innovative approach not only saves energy but also simplifies our watering process, allowing us to focus on other projects.
