Where we dock the barge in the winter
The onset of winter is marked by the first signs of ice forming on our lake. As the fog lifts, the beauty of the sky inspires us to take a walk. This secluded bay is perfect for wintering our barge, sheltered from harsh winds and ice movement. Opal accompanies me as we explore the area, preparing for the tasks ahead.
Moose visit the island often
During our walk, we discover fresh moose tracks scattered around the island. The presence of wildlife serves as a reminder of the vibrant ecosystem that surrounds us, even as we prepare for the isolation of winter. Opal, our ever-curious dog, excitedly steps into one of the tracks, showcasing her playful spirit despite the cold.
Off Grid Island Homesteading involved keeping Materials organized
My main task today involves collecting wood from Berry Point to secure it for the winter. This wood, originally intended for our deck, needs to be moved closer to the cabin to prevent damage from spring floods. As I work, I reflect on the time that has flown by since we first arrived here, emphasizing the importance of each moment.

However, the joy of the season is tinged with the loneliness that comes from being apart from my wife, Melodi. Keeping busy at our off grid island homestead helps, but the emotional weight of isolation becomes evident as I tackle the tasks at hand.

As the sun rises on a beautiful morning, I note the lake is beginning to freeze, marking the transition into winter. With only a couple of months left until winter officially begins, I need to get busy preparing our off grid island homestead for future challenges. The presence of Opal brings warmth to my heart amidst the cold.

Sometimes equipment needs attention, particularly with Pepper, our beloved Kubota. Misdiagnosing the issue leads to a comical yet stressful encounter with a technician who resolves the problem. This experience serves as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant with maintenance on our off grid island homestead.

After the successful repair, I can’t help but joke about Pepper’s antics, bringing a lighter mood to my day. The challenges of off-grid living are many, but they are often met with humor and resilience.
