Leaving the Island: Two Different Worlds

As we reflect on our life as homesteaders on a remote wilderness island in northern British Columbia, Canada, we’re reminded of the stark contrasts between our off-grid lifestyle and the urban convenience just a flight away. Recently, we experienced this concept firsthand when our paths temporarily diverged — Melodi traveled to London to be with family during a challenging time while Ryan stayed behind on the island. In this blog post, we’ll share our individual experiences and perspective while living in two different worlds during our time away from each other.

Insulating the Inverter Room

As Melodi prepared for her journey, Ryan was busy insulating a small shed designed to house their solar batteries and inverters. The insulation was crucial, especially with winter approaching. Ryan explained that insulating such a space could even allow it to be heated with just a candle, although they planned to add a 500-watt heater as an additional safe-guard. He detailed the importance of having a high R-value for insulation, critical for maintaining warmth in the harsh northern winters.

Revamping the Wood Stove Pipe

Ryan took on the task of revamping the wood stove pipe. Previously, it lacked a proper clean-out, which could lead to dangerous creosote buildup. By installing a tee in the pipe, Ryan ensured that they could easily clean it out, preventing potential fire hazards. This modification was a necessary step in maintaining the safety and efficiency of their heating system.

Whoa… That Could Have Been REAL BAD!

While preparing the cabin, Ryan discovered an alarming issue: a mirror had focused sunlight onto a wooden window sill covered in plastic and a waterproof membrane, causing it to burn. This incident was a near miss… thankfully, they were present to prevent what could have been a devastating fire.

Remember Cheri?

As Melodi transitioned to her trip, she stopped in Vancouver and reconnected with her sister Cheri, who visited the island with her family the year before. Their time together was filled with laughter and shopping, a stark contrast to the rugged life Ryan was enduring back on the island. This familial connection provided a much-needed emotional boost during a time of stress and uncertainty.

Just Landed in London!

After two weeks apart, Melodi returned to Canada to find Ryan in a haggard state, dirty and minus a few pounds. He had endured 12 days without running water and power due to freezing temperatures and a solar system failure. Definitely in the harsher of the two different worlds… The resilience required to live off-grid was put to the test as Ryan described his experience of adapting to the harsh conditions. He showcased the ingenuity often necessary in off-grid living.
