Living off grid is an experience filled with unique challenges and rich rewards. On our remote island homestead, every day presents opportunities for teamwork, creativity, and connection with nature. From building essential structures to enjoying simple pleasures like making s’mores by the fire, our life here is a blend of hard work and joyful moments.

Our off grid lifestyle on a remote island is not for the faint-hearted, but we’ve embraced it wholeheartedly. Each day is filled with tasks that require ingenuity and teamwork. Although we sometimes face unexpected situations, we always seem to find a way through them. Our life here is a continuous learning experience.
There’s no dignified way to eat these
After a long day, we take a moment to indulge in s’mores by the fire. While there’s no dignified way to eat them, the experience is filled with laughter and fun. Even our dog Opal, gets in on the action, and eats any marshmallows that happen to fall to the ground. It is times like this that make the hardships living off grid totally worth it!
Our Saturdays…
We cherish our Saturdays as our day off from work. It’s a time for us to unplug from electronics, connect with nature, and recharge. We take the time to appreciate the beauty around us, from the changing colors of the leaves to the peacefulness of our surroundings. This practice restores our balance and keeps us focused on what truly matters in our lives.
Pepper lends a hand
Setting up our solar panels is an absolutely critical task. In fact, any attempt at living off grid without solar power would be a non-starter. We’ve taken careful measures to ensure they are positioned to capture optimal sunlight. With a bit of innovative thinking and teamwork, we’ve managed to build a sturdy platform that will support our energy needs.

As we navigate living off grid, we often encounter wildlife. We have seen moose, numerous black bears, and even grizzlies! Our dog Opal is particularly vigilant about keeping us safe from the smaller, more feathered creatures, adding a layer of fun to our daily routines.
Supply Run Adventures
Our trips to town for supplies are always an adventure. We pack the truck, load it onto the barge, and then head over to the mainland. This process takes time and a great deal of effort. Such is to be expected when living off grid on an island. Each trip can take us anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours on the logging road — depending on the conditions — then another 2 hrs just to get to the city.

One of the more daunting aspects of island life and living off grid is motoring our little skiff through inky blackness and thick fog after returning late at night from a supply run. On one particularly dark night, visibility was zero as we made our way across the water back to the cabin. It was a slow, cautious journey through the void, but the thrill of overcoming such conditions brings a sense of accomplishment that enriches our off grid lifestyle.
